A battle of the finest (and only) magician movies of the fall of 2006.
I greatly enjoyed this! Great job Kyle, Sam & Darshan!
Thanks Leslie! Really appreciate you hearing us out and enjoying it! If you have any suggestions one how we could improve, please let us know.
I think I’m one of the few that really thought the Illusionist was better than the prestige. There were some logic flaws in the prestige that kind of killed the movie for me, though I did like the twists involving *spoiler alert* twins. The Illusionist, on the other hand, I felt had a really nice asthetic throughout the whole movie, and I liked how throughout the movie I did not know if there was actual (movie) magic going on, or if he was just a clever/crafty guy. The end of the Illusionist I felt had a fairly great wrap-up when Paul G finally reads through Edwards N’s book of Illusions. Also, I am a sucker for any government-disobedience sub-plot.
Back to the logic flaws about the Presitge: the thing that bugged me, beyond the weirdness of the interpretation of Nikola Tesla and the strange cloning that A.C. electricity can apparently do, was that Hugh Jackman’s character was slightly an idiot. I can accept the fact that he cloned himself with electricity, but the fact that he did it over and over again, torturing himself again and again was rediculous. His expirement was nearly identical to the Christian Bale twin’s illusion, yet why he didn’t just clone himself once to make a psuedo twin of himself was slightly odd….I guess drowning himself seemed more appealing. With just one single clone he could have fully replicated Christian Bale’s illusion, the same way he did with the lookalike. I guess like you guys said it was about “sacrafice”, but still…kinda dumb on Hugh Jackman’s part to not think of some -albeit ANY- other way to make the trick work beyond killing thousands of clones and storing them in a huge warehouse.
Beyond that I liked them both, I just guess I liked the Illusionist the most due to the previous points. Although, the finger cutting off scene was suuuuper effective and terrifying to me lol.
Nice work guys! I really like the new site and the talk!
